Overview & Responsibilities
The VMware Product Architect is the domain expert for VMware technology at Rackspace who provides product definition amid the growing complexities of building technology products to bridge the gap between the Product Management and the Product Development teams. The Product Architect is responsible for defining the solution, the product’s functionality and also specifying the product’s architecture including designing the product’s implementation for Rackspace customers. The Product Architect must be a functional expert in the internal systems, APIs and processes used at Rackspace that require integration or adjustments to support a new product. The Product Architect understands the market opportunity, interprets market requirements, and is well-versed in technology and development processes.
The Product Architect must be able to communicate well with both external and internal organizations. External to the company, the Product Architect communicates and works with technology partners and customers. Internally, the Product Architect communicates and works with organizational functions such as Engineering, Development, Product Marketing, and Business Unit leaders. The Product Architect also acts as a communication interface between the product planning, development and implementation teams.
Expert in VMware technologies, both current and emerging, with experience in real world use cases and impact.
Broad understanding of IT industry working practices and methodologies.
Strong understanding of public and private cloud computing and hosting trends and technologies.
Expert knowledge of product development processes and systems.
Highly proficient in compute, storage, networking, and security technologies.
Good understanding of how APIs function end-to-end and a basic understanding of a current software programming language such as Python.

Obtain and maintain VMware certification to at least VCAP level. VCIX and VCDX highly desired.
Devise the Product Design document for a product which is a functional solution to the market problem according to how the market problem is described in the Product Plan or in any other similar technique which represents the market problem as provided by the Product Management team.
Design the Product Architecture which is the internals of the product (specifying the product’s implementation) in conformance to the prescribed set of measurable features which are outlined in the Product Design Document or any other similar technique which represents the functional solution devised by the Product Architect.
Follow and maintain a standard framework for Architecture development that is consistently agreed and applied across the VMware Practice Area, using standard methods adopted from industry best practice (TOGAF/ ADM/ VCAP-DCD, etc.)

Effectively translate business requirements into technical solutions by leading the new product discovery process, providing insights and recommendations and formalizing feedback in the completion of relevant and useful high and low level design documents. Technical tasks should be broken down and delegated to the Product Engineers and you will be expected to lead the design and integration of robust and secure VMware solutions.
Ensure that security and compliance standards are adhered to in the design and implementation of new product deployments and the systems as a whole, and offer contributions towards the ever increasing need for more stringent standards. You are expected to have a basic understanding of some common industry frameworks such as SOX and PCI.
Treat major incidents relating to Product releases with an appropriate level of urgency, with the priority being full solution availability for our customers.
Provide training for relevant teams on new product releases (including obtaining sign-off from departmental leaders). Quarterly training sessions and/or presentations to the business are expected
Effectively and confidently communicat to Director level and above on key projects and initiatives, demonstrating the ability to influence and negotiate across Rackspace
Assist pre-sales with complex customer engagements.
Act as a gatekeeper for custom solutions that could harm the customer experience and/ or the Rackspace brand by participating in the one- off approval process working with Product Managers and Product Operations.
Collaborate with all relevant teams to raise awareness of roadmap items, dates and deliverables.
Provide consistent, regular updates and use of project tracking tools/systems.
Attended and provide meaningful contributions to regular inter-departmental meetings.
Proactively participate in the mentoring of junior colleagues from across Rackspace, assisting with the development of career plans and demonstration of progress against their completion.

- Works largely unsupervised as a contributing member of a team. Wide latitude for independent judgment.
10+ years of VMware administration, troubleshooting and management experience in a large corporate or service provider environment
Advanced experience with VMware’s Software Defined Data Centre (SDDC) technologies is desirable, particularly NSX and vSAN
Proven track record in a relevant technical field (ideally VMware)
Domain expertise and experience in public and/or private cloud compute and/or networking architecture design.
Strong background in programming to API contracts for business integration.
Experience with RESTFul API is strongly desired.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering desired.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Public and/or Private cloud compute and/or networking technologies working as an Architect or similar role required.
- General office environment. May require long periods sitting and viewing a computer monitor. Moderate levels of stress may occur at times. No special physical demands required.
